Welcome to Garage Ethos

If you found your way here, something in that post connected with you. Maybe it was the image. Maybe it was the line about good dads. Either way, I am glad you are here.

My name is Tommy Kelly. I am a dad with a few hobbies and something I have been wanting to build for a long time.

I grew up in the garage with my dad. Washing cars. Fixing things. Working on projects together. Those were some of the best and most fond memories of my life. Around age 12, alcoholism changed everything. The garage time stopped. The lessons that were supposed to come with it — the confidence, the competence, the bond — those never fully arrived.

I have thought about that a lot as a dad myself. And I keep landing on the same thing: the best thing I can give my kids is not more stuff. It is time doing things together. Things that matter. Things they will remember and eventually teach their own kids.

That is what Garage Ethos is.

Every Sunday I will send you one issue built around three things:

This Week in the Garage — a real moment from my week with my kids. No highlight reel. Just honest and specific.

One Skill to Teach — one practical hobby skill you can go do with your kid this week. Cars, golf, motorcycles, camping, outdoors, projects, cooking, etc. Simple enough to actually do.

What I Am Working On — a brief update on what I am building or learning. You are along for the ride.

Short, real, and actionable. Every Sunday morning.

If you have kids and hobbies, you already have everything you need. I am just here to help you use them.

Welcome to the garage.
